The Lightning have won three consecutive games and seven of their last eight contests to move within a point of the slumping Atlanta Thrashers for first place in the Southeast Division. Since January 7, Tampa Bay has amassed a terrific 14-3-0 record.

The team continued its winning ways on Thursday, as Martin St. Louis the only goal during the shootout to lift the Lightning to a 3-2 victory over Washington.

Vincent Lecavalier had both regulation goals for Tampa Bay and now has a career-best 39 markers on the season, tops in the NHL at the moment. The standout center needs just three more goals to tie Brian Bradley's franchise mark of 42 set during the 1992-93 campaign.

Lecavalier also ranks second in the league with 78 points, while St. Louis stands third in that category with 77.

Goaltender Marc Denis aided to the win with an outstanding performance between the pipes. He made 36 saves over the first 65 minutes, then stopped all three Washington skaters in the deciding phase.

Tampa Bay is 8-1-0 in its last nine road outings and 17-11-2 as the visitor this season.

Florida will attempt to regroup from Wednesday's shutout loss in Ottawa, in which the Senators' Martin Gerber turned away all 28 shots he faced to lead his club to a 4-0 triumph.

Ed Belfour let in four goals on 33 shots for the Panthers, who entered the matchup off a 1-0 victory over Montreal on Tuesday. Florida had won two in a row prior to Wednesday's setback.

The Lightning have taken two of the three meetings between the rivals this season and were 6-4 victors at the BankAtlantic Center on November 22. That win snapped a string of five consecutive defeats for Tampa Bay in Sunrise.

Florida has won six of the last nine overall encounters in this series.
